Access to the most widely used abortion method in the country is now in limbo after two conflicting court rulings on the legality of the abortion pill, mifepristone.
On Friday a judge in Texas suspended approval of the drug and then postponed the ruling for seven days to give the federal government a week to appeal.
Meanwhile, another federal judge, this one in Washington state, ruled that the federal government not make any changes that could restrict access to the drug in at least 17 states.
It argues that it is not the role of the court to review the scientific evidence but to defer that decision to the Food and Drug Administration.
The abortion pill mifepristone has been widely used in the United States. It was approved by the FDA 20 years ago and is one of two drugs used to induce an abortion through this route.
Mayor Adams opined on the ruling saying and we quote.
“…Banning one of the simplest, fastest, and most common drugs for women to access abortion across the country is a cruel and inhumane decision by a court determined to trample the law without upholding it.”
Gov. Hochul and state attorney general Letitia James echoed the mayor, saying access to abortion pills will remain legal in New York.
