The Legacy of the Škoda Superb: From the Pioneering 1930s Model to the Modern Successor

The new Škoda Superb will be officially presented tomorrow, and the Mladá Boleslav carmaker reminds us of its very first predecessor. This was significantly more expensive in the economy of the time than all subsequent modern superbs of their time.

The ceremonial debut of the new Škoda Superb is approaching. In recent weeks, the Mladoboleslav automobile company presented us with the modern predecessors of the latest Superb, and today it also reminds us of the very first Superb in history. It was already produced in the 1930s, it was the flagship of the brand and its goal was to compete with the then Czechoslovak automobile manufacturer Praga.

The name Superb first appeared in the diary of the then director Karel Hrdlička after one of the meetings, where the company’s management resolved the name of the new flagship model with a six-cylinder engine for the very top of the range. The new luxury Škoda was created for respected manufacturers and the most powerful personalities of Czechoslovakia at the time. The Superb was the limousine of bankers, factory owners, ministerial officials and foreign embassies. The most distant destination was Argentina.

The original Škoda Superb was introduced in 1934 with an innovative backbone chassis, with which the automaker replaced the previous ladder frame. The engine was housed in rubber silent blocks, which contributed to better noise reduction and overall comfort. With the backbone frame, the Superb had far better handling and could go over bumps with less jolts. It was a huge advance for the time.

Along with the standard four-window sedan, the Superb was also produced as a longer six-window sedan. The proud owners, most often passengers in the back seats, could enjoy the huge spaciousness and comfortable footrests. At the same time, they could be proud of the Czechoslovak automobile industry at that time, because production took place completely in Czechoslovakia. The engine, body, chassis, woodwork and upholstery were created in the Škoda factory.

Production of the Superb began in 1935, and in the following three years approximately 600 units were produced with a six-cylinder engine with a SV valve train, which was later replaced by a more modern six-cylinder OHV. With a more powerful heart, 275 units were subsequently produced, some of which were completed only after the end of the Second World War. Even back then, the Superb was also sold with a metallic paint, which was created using the crushed scales of acorns.

With the debut of the latest successor approaching, the automaker reminds us that today superbs are more affordable than ever before. In 1935, a basic sedan was sold at a price of 65,000 crowns, a more luxurious limousine started at 69,000 crowns. The smallest Škoda Popular available to the public in the same year cost 17,900 crowns. The flagship model thus cost almost four times the cheapest model of the brand.

At the request of wealthy customers, the first Superb was also created with exclusive bodywork from masters Sodomka or Uhlík. In authentic historical photographs, we can also see an ambulance of the time or a special off-road version for the army.

The new Škoda Superb of the fourth generation will be officially presented on November 2nd at 19:00 CET. Continue to follow Auto.cz for more information.
