The Legacy of Edwin Powell Hubble and the Hubble Telescope

TANGERANG | TD – The Hubble Telescope is one of NASA’s sophisticated equipment for observing outer space. Did you know that NASA’s most important instrument was named after one of America’s most influential astronomical scientists?

Edwin Powell Hubble, was an American astronomer who was born on November 20, 1889, exactly 134 years old today. Hubble has made many contributions to the field of extragalactic astronomy. His research works include observations of the Andromeda Nebula, which is a spiral nebula in the Milky Way galaxy.

In the nebula, Hubble discovered Cepheid variant stars, whose changes in color and brightness can be used to measure the distances of the stars.

The discovery of the nebula also revealed that there are so many galaxies in the universe, not just the Milky Way. The Andromeda Nebula is now known as a galaxy and is approximately 2.48 million light years away.

Hubble’s knowledge is also inseparable from other scientific experts, including Albert Einstein. Research between scientific experts, including Hubble and Einstein, also complements each other.

If in 1917, Einstein formulated his thoughts in a paper entitled Cosmological Considerations in the General Theory of Relativity which explains the general properties of the universe, then Hubble and one of his colleagues, namely Milton Humason, succeeded in measuring the shift in the motion of galaxies which influence each other with the shift in the red color spectrum.

These experts’ discoveries then gave rise to the idea that the universe is expanding. However, this idea was not definitely confirmed by Hubble. According to him, the idea that the universe is expanding could only be confirmed after decades of research.

Edwin Powell Hubble died in 1953 from a blood clot in the brain. He left his wife without a child.

That is a brief history of the Hubble scientist whose name was immortalized as the name of a space telescope launched in 1990.

Even though the Hubble observing lens is not currently the largest, the telescope has produced many amazing images of the existence of various galaxies in the universe.

The Hubble Telescope is predicted to be 535 kilometers above the Earth’s surface in 2022, and will continue to move to provide deep views into space with highly detailed images of galaxy light.

Happy 134th birthday, Edwin Powell Hubble! (Pat)
