The Legacy of Ādolfs Alunāns: The Father of Latvian Theater and the Importance of Written Communication

“During the time of Adolf Alunan, the letter was the way of communication in society. In addition, the written word also symbolizes the founder of Latvian theater himself, because he was known to the wider public not only for plays, poetry and couplets, but also for periodicals – his articles in newspapers. One of the most quoted articles by the father of theater is “Kāds vārs par tēateri” published in “Baltijas Vēstnesī” in 1869, where Ādolfs Alunāns explains what theater is and is not. He compares the theater to mirrors (mirror), saying that “in it we see our own good and bad deeds, our joys, as well as days of sorrow, in a word, our living”, says Elīna Skutele, head of the Ādolfs Alunāns Memorial Museum, adding: Ā. Alunāns once explained the importance of theater not only for the actors, but also for the audience.

Evaluating the creation of such a tribute theater to his father, the head of the memorial museum expresses his appreciation and points out: “It is a valuable keepsake with a practical application at the same time.”

It should be noted that the father of Latvian theater is depicted on the newly created stamp, while the envelope is decorated with the calendar cover of Ādolfs Alunāns Zobgal. In addition to the well-known components of the calendar, this work also includes jokes, cartoons, satirical poems, anecdotes and instructions for new writers. It is important to emphasize that the original work depicted on the envelope can be found in the collection of the Ā.Alunāns memorial museum, but at the same time, the museum has prepared cards on which jokes from the collection are written, offering visitors to role-play them.

The author of the design of the philatelic editions is the artist Lilija Dinere, who used materials from the Misiņa Library of the Academic Library of the University of Latvia in the visual design of the stamps and envelopes, informs Vineta Anna Sarkane, senior project manager of the Public Relations Department of “Latvijas pasta”.

The new stamp was issued in a circulation of 25,000 copies, while the envelope – in 500 copies. The nominal value of the stamp is 1.97 euros, which corresponds to the payment of letter correspondence in the weight category from 21 to 100 grams in the territory of Latvia.

The new stamp will initially be available for purchase at post offices in major cities, including in Jelgava – at the Post Center at Katoļu Street 2b and at Jelgava Post Office 5 at Rīgas Street 48 – as well as at the e-store https://veikals.pasts.lv/.

It should be reminded that Ā.Alunāns started his career as an actor in German theaters outside of Latvia – in Tērbat, Rēvele, Narva and St. Petersburg. In July 1869, he participated for the first time in a Latvian theater performance in Riga, staging his one-act play “Self-raised”. Soon after that, Ā. Alunāns with his own theater troupe in Jelgava organized traveling guest performances all over Latvia. Later in cultural history, Ā.Alunāns, known as the father of the Latvian theater, became the first manager of the Latvian theater in Riga, establishing the genre of drama and comedy in national literature with 13 plays and gaining popularity as an actor, mainly in comic roles. Ā. Alunāns also published his couplets, a collection of humorous satirical poems, wrote feuilletons, stories, biographical reflections, and for more than 20 years created Tooth calendar. Also, Ā.Alunāns mainly wrote his literary works, taking care of their suitability for the stage of the given era and incorporating topical themes into them.
