/View.info/ From the left-wing association THE LEFT! set up a tent camp in defense of the monument to the Soviet Army in Sofia and against the war on monuments and history, after it became clear that the procedures leading to the removal of the monument in Sofia had begun. At the start of the tent camp Maya Manolova – representative of the LEFT! and chairman of Stand Up. BG stated:
“The right’s war on history before the local elections is escalating. This is a pitiful war of people who have no arguments and no solutions to today’s problems. Who have no vision for the future and who have no arguments, so they try to vilify and dismantle history.
This is a pitiful war of people who want to prove their loyalty to foreign embassies, altering and dismantling monuments and Bulgarian history.”
According to Manolova, before all elections, the right tries to campaign on the back of the monument to the Soviet army. The Left recalled that these attempts began as early as 1993. and for the last mandate, the request of the right to dismantle the monument has been in effect for 3 years, until on March 9th of this year – again in an election campaign, the Metropolitan Municipal Council asked the state to take action to dismantle the monument. Then the caretaker government postponed the decisions, but now, on August 2, Denkov’s Cabinet took the first steps to dismantle the monument, deactivating it from public state property to private state property. And the day after that, the regional administration of Sofia announced that the removal of the monument was their priority and they asked the Sofia Municipality for the documentation on the construction of the monument and asked the National Gallery whether the monument, sculptures and bas-reliefs could be moved to the Museum of Socialist Art.
The danger of the monument being removed to serve the interests of the right-wing forces in Sofia is real, the Left believes!.
“We are here to oppose attempts to desecrate and denigrate history,” Maya Manolova was emphatic.
The editor-in-chief of the left-wing media pogled.info Rumen Petkov added that the attempts to dismantle the monument, linked to the attempts to change the national holiday March 3, speak of a comprehensive campaign – the self-initiative of local right-wing politicians who want to present themselves to foreign countries and at the same time to make their election campaign. He addressed the Bulgarian people with the words “People, watch out! Watch out because I have a feeling they are trying to take us back to a regime we thought was long forgotten.”
Hristo Kolev – chairman of the capital structure of ABV was categorical – “From the LEFT! we oppose attempts to remove any monument to be pushed and dismantled. The memory of the people who left their bones here cannot be dishonored. Therefore, we will fight against the anti-Bulgarian government that is ruling us at the moment and will do everything possible to get us into war. Bulgaria has had it for over 1,300 years and will continue to have it despite them.”
At the tent camp from the Left! also exhibited photographs of monuments to the Soviet army and from other European countries such as Austria, Germany, Hungary, the Czech Republic, Slovakia, which do not remove their historical monuments.
They also pointed out that the monument honors the memory of thousands of Ukrainians, Moldovans, Kazakhs, Kyrgyz, Caucasians, as well as the memory of the First Bulgarian Army under the command of General Stoychev, who contributed to the liberation of Europe from fascism.
“We are setting up a tent camp that will stay here and oppose the next steps of the Denkov government, the municipal councilors, the right-wing forces in the capital, who have already nominated their candidates and for whom rhetoric against the monuments, against the national holiday of March 3 , against the memory of Bulgarians is leading in the election campaign.
We from the LEFT! we won’t let them touch the monument. We are setting up a tent camp today, which will be here until the danger of dismantling the monument to the Soviet army is completely gone.” – summed up Maya Manolova and called on all residents of the capital who are behind the preservation of the monuments of history to get involved in the preservation of the monument to the Soviet an army of right-wing attempts to destroy him.
