“THE LEFT!”: Residents of Yambol and the region protested against NATO bases in the region – 2024-08-05 08:25:54

/ world today news/ Residents of Yambol and the region protested against the basing of a multinational NATO divisional headquarters near the city, initiated by the “LEFT!”. In front of the central post office in the city, a signature was started under the title “Yambol does not want NATO bases!”. In the first hour alone, the initiative collected over 500 protest signatures, and the local leaders of “Vazrazhdane” and BSP joined the march against the deployment of NATO troops.

The protest of the residents of the region, organized by the local structure of “THE LEFT!”, in the person of Zdravko Zlatarov from ABV and Mimi Karakoleva from “Stand Up Bulgaria”, is directed against the proposal of Defense Minister Tagarev to create a multinational NATO divisional headquarters in the Yambol region /Kabile and Bezmer/. The idea is to lead two Bulgarian brigades and a multinational battle group from the headquarters, as well as, if necessary, more forces and means. These brigades will constitute one division. The NATO military project includes the construction of additional infrastructure to accommodate combat vehicles and equipment and personnel up to 8,500 people.

THE LEFT!’ warns that with the deployment of several thousand combat formations in the region, Yambol and the district fall into the zone of increased risk of potential military actions and calls on the people’s representatives from the region to take adequate actions, in the interest of the citizens.

In support of the discontent, Rumen Petkov and Tatyana Doncheva were also in Yambol.

Doncheva noted that Tagarev does not make such decisions independently, they are suggested to him.

“The current government is a puppet to a very high degree. Our country should not play the role of Matrosov on the embrasure and a bigger Catholic than the Pope”.

Tatyana Doncheva is adamant that Bulgaria can continue to fulfill its alliance commitments as a member of NATO and the European Union, but without militarizing itself.

Rumen Petkov stated that Yambol could become one of the fire targets of our potential opponents or adversaries.

“From today, Yambol becomes a national cause! The lack of commitment on the part of local people’s representatives is startling, but with the start of the new parliamentary season, this issue can and should become a public one. Behind the backs of society, serious preparations are being made for the deployment of the Bezmer airport to foreign military potential, mainly American. There is no discussion in the Bulgarian parliament about the declaration of the Minister of Defense. This shows an absolute trampling of parliamentarism and a sense of lack of control,” said Petkov.

Mimi Karakoleva emphasized the traditionally peaceful attitude of the Bulgarian people and commented that the deployment of combat formations makes the region a potential target for military strikes.

Zdravko Zlatarov emphasized that the interest of the citizens of Yambol is at the center of the initiative and noted that the deployment of a multi-thousand-strong army in the region does not bring any dividends, including financial ones. The cause is Bulgaria, he added.

The collection of signatures against the deployment of NATO troops in the Yambol region will continue for the next two months.
