The left complains about the success of the right to demonize the Sao Paulo Forum

(EFE) 27 Latin American countries.

The right-wing “plot” was denounced in one of the debates this Saturday at the XXVI Meeting of the Sao Paulo Forum, which ends on Sunday in Brasilia and is attended by delegations of a hundred political parties from 27 countries in the region.

In the debate, strategies were addressed to combat false news disseminated by the right and to dismantle the “narrative” with which it managed to convince public opinion of the supposed danger of progressive parties.

Researchers Fernanda Sarkis and Marcus Nogueira, hired by the ruling Workers’ Party (PT) of Brazil to analyze the way in which the right takes advantage of the networks to spread its “narrative”, affirmed that the main target was precisely the Sao Paulo Forum .

“It is from this narrative arc that all false news gains a supposed coherence,” said researcher Fernanda Sarkis.

According to specialists at the service of the largest left-wing party in Latin America and of which President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva was one of its founders, the strategy turned the Sao Paulo Forum into “a clandestine organization that meets secretly to implant a dictatorial and communist domination in the continent”.

According to Sarkis, right-wing influencers on the networks edit the videos they get from the Sao Paulo Forum meetings to publish them in a fragmented and biased way.

“It is from this narrative arc that all the false news are gaining a supposed coherence,” said the researcher.

And said narrative, like a Hollywood drama, identifies the “new right” as the “good guys” and the “old left” as the “villain” interested in implanting communist and corrupt dictatorships in the countries of the region.

The discussion of the matter coincided with the publication of a survey according to which 52% of Brazilians believe that Brazil runs the risk of becoming a communist regime, something with which 33% fully agree and 19% partially agree.

73% of those who fear the country will become communist voted for Jair Bolsonaro in the October elections in which the right-wing leader was defeated by Lula.

According to the researchers, the strategy to “capture hearts and minds” through speeches disseminated on the Internet was launched several years ago by the conservative and liberal right around the world.

“All these new leaders of the right who know how to communicate very well, who repeat the same speech, are the result of a funded plan to train and educate them,” Nogueira said.

“All these new leaders of the right who know how to communicate very well, who repeat the same speech, are the result of a funded plan to train and educate them,” Nogueira said.

To combat the disinformation that criminalizes left-wing parties, it is necessary to dismantle the narrative as a whole without wasting efforts to deny each false piece of news one by one, say the researchers.

The president of the PT, Gleisi Hoffmann, admitted that the progressive forces do not have the same financial resources as the right to maintain the ideological struggle on the networks.

“But we have a monstrous differential. We have the militancy and the desire to fight,” said Hoffmann, who also defended a joint venture with “counter-hegemonic” content producers, as the PT did in the 2022 elections.
