The Lebanese parliament still fails to elect a new president

GBC News: Lebanese parliament failed to elect a president to succeed Michel Aoun for the second time on Thursday, due to the lack of a constitutional quorum.

Aoun’s term expires on October 31st.

The opening of the parliamentary session was delayed by about 10 minutes, due to the lack of a quorum in the chamber, so the President of the Parliament Nabih Berri postponed the session to 11:00, after 71 deputies attended the meeting. public classroom.

Then Berri postponed the electoral session for the new president to the 20th of this month, not having reached the required quorum.

This is the second time that parliament has failed to elect a new head of state, after no clear winner appeared during the first session on 29 September.

The constitutional deadline for the election of the country’s new president began on September 1st and continues until October 31st.

Constitutionally, the election of the President of the Republic takes place by a majority of two thirds of the 128 members of the parliament, ie 86 deputies, and in the second session by an absolute majority, ie 65 deputies.
