It is difficult to grasp the size of the leadership chasm into which the USA has plummeted under Joe Biden. For non-Americans, it must seem surreal. For us, it is agonizing. From the Administration’s suicidal attack on cheap energy which once gave us security and made us rich, to the border crises that allow drug cartels to pummel our cities and poison our children, we are in catastrophe mode. The advent of Joe Biden has brought America to its most despairing days. My British colleagues on these pages rightly wonder how long America can suffer. The abject Biden is so lacking in leadership ability that he cannot even take charge of his dog.
Pets have long been part of White House life. Whose companionship could better ease the pressures of one of the world’s most difficult jobs than man’s best friend? Many previous presidents have had pets, and their behavior has been closely observed by the public. In most cases, these pets have been well-behaved, adding a positive, even wholesome aspect to the image of president and family.
The Biden White House pet, Commander, is a two-year-old German Shepherd. It’s an outstanding choice of name, making it all too clear who is in charge in the relationship. Breathtakingly, the dog has initiated at least 11 biting incidents just on members of the Secret Service while in residence, raising questions about the Bidens’ ability to manage their pet – or anything else for that matter. This President is so inept, he cannot even ensure visitors and staff are safe from physical harm from his dog. Such is the “leader of the free world.”
In the latest occurrence on 25 September, CNN reported that “around 8pm, a Secret Service Uniformed Division police officer came in contact with a First Family pet and was bitten. The officer was treated by medical personnel.” The serial biter adds yet another notch on his collar.
Happily, the officer did not suffer serious injury, but these repeated incidents suggest an alarming lack of responsibility and control by Commander’s master. This story has escalated from a presidential anecdote to a matter of public concern and embarrassment – the more so, as Biden’s previous dog, Major, was also a serial biter. It is not fair to blame the dogs, at this point: the responsibility lies with the animals’ owner.
The White House only publicly acknowledged this issue when sued by the nonprofit organization Judicial Watch. The group released a statement: “it received 194 pages of records from the US Department of Homeland Security (DHS) revealing 10 attacks by President Joe Biden’s German Shepherd, Commander, on officers and agents of the US Secret Service (USSS) between October 2022 and January 2023…” And yet the incidents have continued.
If Commander belonged to anyone but Joe Biden, by now law enforcement would have acted to take the animal into custody in the interests of public safety.
While this dog drama hardly rises to a crisis of nuclear proportions, its mishandling is another window into the abilities of a president currently under investigation for some very serious alleged misdeeds. For many reasons from canine crises to the scandals surrounding his family members’ business activities and conduct, the nation is increasingly disenchanted with the President, as his dismal polling demonstrates.
The country has well and truly gone to the dogs.
