The so-called president of the self-proclaimed South Ossetia, Anatoly Babilov, has announced that “legal steps” are being taken to include the occupied territory of Georgia in Russia, the Medusa web newspaper reported on Wednesday.
“I believe that unification with Russia is our strategic goal, our path, the dream of the people, and we will follow this path,” Babilov said in a message to members of Russia’s ruling party, United Russia.
“We will take appropriate legal steps in the near future. The Republic of South Ossetia will be part of its historical homeland – Russia, “added the leader of the self-proclaimed republic.
In 2008, after the Russian war with Georgia, Russian occupation forces remained in South Ossetia. The internationally unrecognized government of South Ossetia declared independence, which Moscow hastily recognized.
However, the international community has not recognized the self-proclaimed republic and still considers South Ossetia to be part of Georgia.
