NEW YORK For 120 years, a New York court sentenced Keith Raniere to prison on Tuesday, setting up a secret society in which he sexually abused women. The leader of the sect also received a fine of $ 1.75 million (40.6 million crowns), Reuters reported. Ranierea was already found guilty by a jury last June, and before Tuesday’s verdict he had to hear the testimonies of 15 of his victims.

Raniere created a sect-like NXIVM company to which he lured women under the pretext of self-improvement. However, according to investigators, the exercises consisted mainly of sexual intercourse with Ranier.

He called the newcomers women slaves, while those who brought in another woman were given the title of lady. The women were forced to starve and were also branded on their bodies with an inscription with Raniere’s initials.
Sixty-year-old Raniere was charged in court with allegations of extortion, human trafficking and sexual offenses, including possession of child pornography. In June, the jury found him guilty on all counts.
Among others, the daughter of Canadian-American billionaire Edgar Bronfman, Clare Bronfman, became involved with Raniere’s association. According to investigators, it used over $ 100 million (CZK 2.3 billion) to fund NXIVM. Last April, as part of an indictment agreement, she confessed that she had deliberately given refuge to a woman who came to the United States on a fake work visa. This woman then worked for her and for the NXIVM organization. In September, Bronfman was sentenced to six years and nine months behind bars.
