On Wednesday, the legal committee of the Chamber of Deputies gave a favorable opinion on a legislative proposal that provides that the traffic police can order the removal of illegally parked vehicles not only from the roadway, but also from the sidewalks, Agerpres reports.

The legislative proposal amends paragraph 1 of article 64 of the Government’s emergency ordinance no. 195/2002 concerning circulation on public roads.
“The traffic police can order the removal of illegally parked vehicles. The lifting and storage of vehicles in specially prepared places is carried out by local public administrations or, as the case may be, by the public road administrator”, reads the project. initiated by the deputy of the USR Cătălin Drula.
According to the provisions in force, the Traffic Police can order the evacuation of vehicles illegally parked on the roadway.
The condition set by the government to support the project
The government has announced that it supports the legislative initiative, provided that the lifting measure is ordered only if the minimum distance of one meter for pedestrians is not respected.
“The reason is precisely that there are not enough parking spaces in Romania and lifting all vehicles off the sidewalks would be practically impossible at the moment,” said Alexandru Popa, representative of the Road Administration of the Ministry of Internal Affairs.
He said even now parking on pavements is prohibited, but this administrative measure to lift vehicles is not ordered.
“With regard to the obligation of the meter, in its current form the task of local administrations is envisaged to set up parking on the sidewalks, with the condition of respecting the distance of one meter for pedestrians. The novelty introduced by the legislative initiative is that it is eliminated the phrase “on the side of the road”. The proposal aims to remove all illegally parked vehicles, including those on the pavement, “he explained.

The project adoption report was approved with a majority of votes in favor and 2 against.
On 13 September, the Industry Commission of the Chamber of Deputies also expressed a favorable opinion on the project.
The legislative proposal must be discussed by the plenary session of the Chamber of Deputies, which is the deliberative body.
