The Laver Cup is coming to the capital!
After Prague, Chicago, Geneva, Boston, London and Vancouver, the seventh edition of the Laver Cup will take place in Berlin this year. Roger Federer (43) founded the tournament to honor the Australian tennis legend Rod Laver (86). But how does the format work and which stars are taking part? BILD has all the information.
How does the Laver Cup work?
At the Laver Cup, six European tennis stars compete as “Team Europe” against six opponents from the rest of the world, who compete as “Team World”. Three of the six players on a team qualify directly based on their world ranking. Captains Björn Borg (68/Europe) and John McEnroe (65/World) also select three other players each.
A total of twelve games are played over three days. Four matches (three singles and one doubles) are played on each day. Each player plays one or two singles and at least four of the six participants on a team must play a doubles match. The winning team must reach 13 points.
The points are awarded as follows: Each day, one more point is awarded for a win. In other words: On day 1, you get one point, wins on day 2 are worth two points, and each win on the last day is worth three points. Each match is played in a best-of-three format.
