The film “Journeys of Sam”, which had its world premiere last November at the largest North American genre film festival “FantasticFest” in Austin, USA, is a peculiar fairy tale for adults – a black comedy, in which the keenest viewers will be able to see the similarity of the story with an ancient Greek myth. The film tells the story of Sam, a Belgian, who goes to a remote part of Europe to look for his father. The search for his father takes him into a world Sam has never experienced before. As a result of unexpected turns of the situation, the Belgian falls into the captivity of a family of farmers, from where, as it turns out, only a small piglet can save him. According to the filmmakers, various original cinematography techniques were used in the making of the film in order to simultaneously talk about such classic themes as love, freedom, hatred, jealousy, etc.

“I’m glad that Latvian viewers will have the opportunity to escape from reality and find themselves in another world,” says the director before the film’s premiere Aiks Karapetjans.

“We hope that Aika Karapetjan’s black comedy “Sema tjejjujumi”, with which we will open the new Latvian cinema season, will be a turning point in genre cinema in Latvia. Since its world premiere in the USA, the film continues to gain audience response outside of Latvia, and we hope that it will also be appreciated by Latvian viewers, ” the film’s producer Gints Grube.

The main role in the film is played by the popular Belgian actor of European cinema, Kevin Jansen, who starred in such popular films as director Coralie Ferger’s “Revenge” and Christian Volkman’s “Secret Room”. Young and promising as well as experienced and already beloved Latvian actors – Laura Siliņa, Aigars Vilims, Juris Bartkevičs, Normunds Griestiņš – play roles in the film “Sema’s Travels”. The cameraman is Jurģis Kmins (“Bille”, “1906” etc.), the main artist is Jurģis Krāsons, the make-up artist is Maija Gundare, the costume designer is Liene Dobrāja, the producers are Gints Grūbe and Inese Boka-Grūbe (“Melania’s Chronicle”, “Father Night”, “January”, etc.).

It has already been reported that the Latvian and Belgian co-production film “Sema’s Travels”, made by the Latvian film studio “Mistrus Media” in co-production with the Belgian company “Polar Bear”, has also attracted the attention of the influential television network “HBO Europe” – it has purchased the rights to show the film, thus proving the cinematographic and substantive value of Latvian films.
