At the beginning of the theater’s 105th season, the director Elmārs Senkovs informed that he will not continue his work as the theater’s artistic director. The other three members of Senkov’s artistic team – Suhanovs, Mäkens and Gediņa – have also expressed the decision to change the form of legal relations.
At the same time, the artists will continue their creative cooperation with the Latvian National Theater and today they have started the rehearsal process for the first new production of the season – Justīne Kļava’s drama, which was inspired by Raini’s “Spēlēju, dancoju”, the premiere of which is scheduled for September 14.

The actor Krūzkops has also decided to terminate the employment relationship with the Latvian National Theater in its current form. Creative cooperation between the theater and the actor will continue on the basis of royalty agreements. He will continue to participate in the existing repertoire performances, including the production “Richards. Nothing personal”, for which the actor was nominated for the “Gamers’ Night” award. On Wednesday, Kruzkop also started the rehearsal process for the role in the new production “Speleju, dancoju”.
Kruzkop explains that this is not a spontaneous decision and is not related to a change of directors. Kruzkop’s decision is related only to artistic goals.
As reported, the Latvian National Theater started the new season with a festive meeting on Tuesday. The traveling theater awards will be presented at the meeting – Kārļas Sebra’s ring, Elza Radzina’s pendant, Velta Līne’s “Antas Klints ring”, Ieviņas and Kārlēna’s lighters.
Former Minister of Education and Science, director of the society “Latvijas Kulturas projekti” Vītols began to perform the duties of the director of the National Theater from July 24. He replaces the current director of the Latvian National Theater Jānis Vimba, who performed these duties from June 27, 2018.
Vītols won an open competition for the position of theater manager among 14 applicants. The chairman of the nomination commission, State Secretary of the Ministry of Culture, Dace Vilsone, stated that the nomination commission highly appreciated Vitols’ vision for the development of the National Theater for the next five years.
As the main priorities, Vītols has set the preservation of Latvia’s cultural identity and the creation of new national cultural values.
Also, Vitols has demonstrated “convincing financial, administrative and personnel management competencies” in the competition, as well as the applicant’s experience in managing international cultural projects and the ability to coordinate the examination of various issues both in state and local government institutions and internationally.
Vītols graduated from the University of Latvia with a master’s degree in philosophy, while he obtained a professional master’s degree in business management from the business school “Turība”.
According to the information in the archive of the LETA agency, Vitols was elected to the 6th Saeima from the “LZS/KDS/LDP” list, and to the 7th Saeima – from the list of the People’s Party. He also held the position of parliamentary secretary of the Ministry of Finance.
Currently, Vītols is the director of the association “Latvijas Kulturas projekti” and a member of the board of the real estate development company SIA “Ultimo Investment”.
