The Latvian National Museum of Art and “Neputns” publish a catalog for the exhibition

The Latvian National Museum of Art and “Neputns” publish a catalog for the exhibition “Unaccustomed Souls. Symbolism in the Art of the Baltic States” Simultaneously with the opening of the exhibition “Unaccustomed Souls.

Exhibition “Unaccustomed Souls. Symbolism in the Art of the Baltic States ”was first opened in 2018 at the Orsay Museum in Paris. According to Rodolfo Rapetti, its curator-general and author of the concept (Rodolphe Rapetti, France), the works selected for the exhibition of ideas invited to get to know the symbolism in Lithuanian, Estonian and Latvian art in the period from the 1990s to the 1930s. The ambitious joint project has become one of the largest international events of Latvia’s representation in the centenary of the Baltic States, now this exhibition can be seen at the Latvian National Museum of Art (LNMM).

The exhibition catalog in Latvian and English, prepared for publication by the Latvian National Museum of Art and the publishing house “Neputns”, continues the common idea called “Unaccustomed Souls. Symbolism in the Art of the Baltic States ”. The introduction to the book includes articles by several industry experts on the Baltic historical context, national art schools, and the history of this unique project. Among the authors of the texts are Rodolfs Rapeti, director of the castles and national museums of Compiegne and Blairancoura, and Osvalds Daugelis, director of the MK Čurlionis National Museum of Art (until 2019).Osvaldas Daugelis, 1955–2020), exhibition curator of the Kumu Art Museum (until 2018) Lisa Pehlapu (Liis Pählapuu), Leading researcher of the Institute of Literature, Folklore and Art of the University of Latvia, Dr. philol. Pauls Daija, Head of the Latvian Visual Arts Department of LNMM Dr. art. Ginta Gerharde-Upeniece, LNMM exhibition curator Dr. art. Dace Lamberga.

The largest part of the publication – images – includes all the works of art that were displayed in the exhibition at the Orsay Museum. As in the exposition, they are arranged in three thematic parts in the catalog – “Myths and Legends”, “Soul” and “Nature”. Comprehensive information on each work of art is provided by art scholars from the three Baltic States. It should be mentioned that the exhibition and the book have not been an opportunity for the people of Latvia to get acquainted with the visual art heritage of Estonia and Lithuania, to compare and evaluate it.

At the end of the catalog – biographies of artists, chronology, bibliography and index of persons.

Volume: 464 pages.

The compilers of the catalog are Ginta Gerharde-Upeniece and Laima Slava.

The author of the book’s design is the artist Anta Pence.

The catalog can be purchased at the Neputna Gallery, www.neputns.lv (price – 35.00 EUR), in the LNMM museum store and in the best Latvian bookstores.

Exhibition “Unaccustomed Souls. Symbolism in the Art of the Baltic States ”will be on display in the Great Hall of the Latvian National Museum of Art until February 21, 2021.
