The actor, director and businessman Antonio Banderas received this Thursday the 2023 Presidential Award, awarded by the Latin Recording Academy, at the 24th annual Latin Grammy Awards held in Seville.
“I need music like eating,” he said when collecting this distinction, which is only granted on exceptional occasions and which recognizes outstanding members of the Latin community for promoting and encouraging arts and culture in the world.
Regarding the relevance of music in his career, Banderas recalled his work in the film ‘Evita’ alongside Madonna, as well as his participation in the animated saga ‘Shreck’ and in iconic Broadway musicals.
As justified by the Academy when announcing the award of this award, Banderas “has been a firm promoter of the musical arts throughout his career” and in 2019 he founded the Teatro del Soho in his native Malaga.
Since then his company has brought to the stage successful works in Spanish of iconic musicals such as ‘Company’ and ‘A Chorus Line’, thus revitalizing the theater scene of Malaga, making the shows accessible to new generations of spectators from all over the country with touring productions. , highlighted the Academy.
“I deeply believe in the power of art at all levels, of poetry, literature, theater, film and music for education. People have to think about those young people who, by entering deeply into those worlds, will achieve something very important: not being manipulated and having the personality to decide about their lives,” Banderas highlighted.
The actor, who received the distinction from Alejandro Sanz, said that “art is the best way to learn to live” and wanted to thank for this “the immense gift” of the Latin Grammys having moved to this edition to Spain.
Along the same lines and in statements to EFE, he celebrated that this gala, the first held outside the US, has ended up in Seville, which, “like all of Andalusia in general, is a fertile land for creation, with great painters, poets, writers and musicians.”
“It was said that the Latin Grammys had to come to Spain and, if they did, that they had to come to Andalusia,” he said, “grateful” for the gesture of the Academy and before being sure that these awards will return to these lands. in the future.
