LYRICS Research The latest report shows that the Earth does not have seven continents as we know, Africa, Antarctica, Asia, Oceania, Europe, North America and South America.

A new study, published in the journal Gondwana Research, suggests that we only have six continents.

This remarkable claim is the result of a detailed study of the geological processes behind the breakup of Europe and North America, and of how these lands have evolved over time.

The main author of the paper, Prof. Jordan Pethean, from the University of Derby, explained to Earth.com that his team’s findings show that “the North American and Eurasian tectonic plates have not completely broken apart, as is traditionally thought.” which happened 52 million years ago.

Instead, he says, these plates are still stretching and are still breaking apart, rather than becoming completely separate entities.

In other words, North America and Europe can be considered one continent, instead of two separate continents.

The research focuses on the volcanic island of Iceland, which was previously known to have formed around 60 million years ago as a result of the mid-Atlantic ridge.

It is thought that this tectonic boundary, formed by the North American and Eurasian plates, triggered the rise of the hot plume that eventually formed the island.

However, by carefully analyzing tectonic movements across the African continent, Pethean and his colleagues have challenged this theory and proposed a radical new idea.

They argue that Iceland contains geological fragments of the European and North American tectonic plates, along with the Greenlandic Faroes Ridge (GIFR).

This, they say, shows that these regions are not isolated landforms, as previously thought: they are interconnected parts of a larger continental structure.
