The Latest Raspberry Pi 5: Increased Computing Power, PCIe Support, and New Features

And here it is! The British Raspberry Pi Foundation has introduced the fifth generation of its most popular Linux minicomputer. Raspberry Pi 5 will hit store shelves at the end of October and promises 2-3x increase in computing power compared to its predecessor Raspberry Pi 4.

Raspberry Pi 5

New chipset, PCIe support and power supply

The chipset will take care of that Broadcom BCM2712. Another technical innovation will be preparation for PCIe 2.0 interface support through a hat or other adapter. If you look at the photo above, the PCIe is located on the board where the DSI (display connector) used to be. Additional connectors have also been added.

Between the power supply and HDMI is the connector for connecting the battery, because Malina offers it RTC support (real time circuit). Between the HDMI pair we also see a UART connector for a serial terminal.

New chipset, PCIe 2.0 support and finally a power button

To add enough juice to all of this, the Raspberry Pi 5 now works with 5V/5A power supply via USB-C Power Delivery. Together with Pětka, it also comes new 27W power adapter. With the existing 3A USB sources for Raspberry Pi 4, you will most likely have a problem with the load.

Fast MIPI and connection of two cameras at once

There was also a redesign of the MIPI interface for connecting displays and cameras through the flat connectors that have been a part of large Malins since ages. The original connector for connecting the display was occupied by PCIe signals, so 2× 1.5Gbps MIPI now we can find in the places where the camera used to be.

2x HDMI, 2x camera/display and new RP1 microcontroller for fast I/O

We can connect any combination of devices to these connectors, so don’t worry two cameras.

Integration is interesting microcontroller RP1which is supposed to help with fast I/O signals.

New optional cooler to keep it from burning

Of the official accessories, it is finally worth mentioning next to it new cover with active cooler still Raspberry Pi Active Coolerthat is, a combination of a separate and more powerful active and passive cooler in one, which will cover most of the surface of the board, but will be low enough.

The new version will also complement the hardware Raspberry Pi OS Bookwormwhich will arrive in mid-October and will bring the support of the fifth generation of Malina.

At RPishop from 1,739 crowns

You can already find Raspberry Pi 5 in the offer of the Czech distributor RPishop.czwhich expects stock on October 23rd.

The official Active Cooler will be sold by RPishop for 149 crownsa box with a simpler fan for 179 crowns and a new 27W power source in white and black for 349 crowns. Already dedicated page you will find several more sets with everything.
