The Latest Hack in Iran: Politics, Revolution, and Digital Attacks Explained

Politics, revolution and digital attacks: what is behind the latest hack in Iran?

The flames of the Iranian revolution are ignited again, this time in the digital world.

Iranian hacker group Black Reward, which previously targeted the Iranian government, has announced a new attack, this time targeting a financial app that millions of Iranians use for digital transactions.

According to the translation of screenshots posted online by the group, the messages read: “Death to Khamenei. We are returning to the streets because the revolution continues. For women, life, freedom.” These posts were accompanied by the hashtag “#MahsaAmini”, referring to an Iranian woman killed at a police station in September 2022, sparking protests across the country.

A message was posted on the group’s Telegram channel: “As we all know, the flames of the revolution may die down, but they will never go out. The Black Reward hacker group belongs to the people and will be with the people until victory.”

These messages were distributed through the 780 application, which provides the ability to conduct financial transactions such as online shopping, paying bills, and viewing bank balances. The developer of the app claims to have over 6 million users. Several people posted videos of the alerts and commented on these messages on Twitter late Thursday and Friday.

The group’s Telegram channel, which has over 87,000 subscribers, has been inactive since February 28, when it posted the second part of the alleged hack of the Fars news agency, which is run by the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC).
