The latest film by Polish director Smaržovskis – Cinema – Culture + was shot in Latvia

The film addresses several themes – intolerance, intolerance of others, the need to be aware of history and the overestimation of related traumas. At the heart of the film is a family experiencing an important event – a wedding. Against the background of this event, the viewer follows the relationship and fate of one particular family. It is a rich layer with a dynamic storyline, where there is love, jealousy, financial machinations and even blackmail. Gradually, the modern story mixes with the layer of historical events, in which the viewer is brought in by his grandfather Antoni, or in his youth – Anteks. He is the viewer’s connection to the past, a living memory that throws the viewer into the whirlpool of events in the forties. The boundaries of time are being torn down and the comic tone of the film’s beginning is increasingly turning into a frightening grotesque, the absurdity of which on a completely physical level forces us to think about the meaning of human values.

The film has a great opportunity to become a bright event in the context of European cinema. The director is the well-known Voicex Smarzowski, who earned attention with the film “Clergy” (2018) – it became one of the most scandalous Polish films, reached an unimaginable record number even for Poland (a total of five million viewers) and received awards in the world’s most important film festivals.

“Wedding II / W II” was filmed in two places in Latvia. Tukums hosted a memorial scene in a small Polish town during the war – the buildings on Dārza and Harmonijas streets were prepared in the historically appropriate architectural style of the 1940s, the streets were decorated with signs and signs typical of the time, window shutters and doors were replaced and painted for film. The second filming location was a country house in Līdumnieki Parish, Mivriniki Cibla District, selected last year and even sown cereals for filming purposes in the autumn. The locals also took part in the mass shows.
