The fire which destroyed the Manoir Taschereau on the night of Tuesday to Wednesday leaves a great void in the sense of the seigneurial history of Sainte-Marie.
At least that is what the writer from Marin, Raymond Beaudet, believes, who maintains that the municipality has just lost its last witness to seigneurial history.
Not a first
This is not the first time that one of the Taschereau family mansions has been engulfed in flames throughout history. On August 13, 1827, the oldest manor of the five belonging to the Taschereaus suffered the same fate as the manor of 1809, located at 730 rue Notre-Dame Nord.
For the record, the writer also adds that Cardinal Elzéar-Alexandre Taschereau, the first cardinal born in Canada, was born there in 1820. The cardinal also returned regularly to the Manor over the years.
Mr. Beaudet also recalls that another of the former Taschereau manors was also demolished in 1956, which adds even more to the symbolism of seeing the building destroyed by flames when it was not as well maintained as by the past.
For the moment, it is impossible to know if it will be possible to save what remains of the heritage building of Sainte-Marie. However, Raymond Beaudet knows that it will be difficult to repair such a strong mariver symbol.
