The Last Oricru: Final Cut – Improved Multiplayer, Combat, Exploration, and More!

In mid-October, it will be one year since the release of the Czech action RPG The Last Oricru from the developers from the GoldKnights studio. Although we appreciated the interesting conflict, the interweaving of science fiction and fantasy, or the impact of decisions, we were not the only ones who, on the other hand, pointed to the weaker technical condition, unbalanced difficulty, or confusing user interface. It was clear that GoldKnights still had a lot of work to do and incremental improvements to make the game’s qualities outweigh its flaws, and in the end we had to wait almost a full year. Now, however, The Last Oricru comes in its greatly refreshed version, labeled Final Cut, and at least according to the description on Steam leaves no stone unturned.

Before we get into discussing the changes, we can’t ignore that the developers have released an improved version of their game somewhat under the radar. The video in which executive producer Vladimír Geršl describes the news appeared on YouTube as non-public already on September 13, and the mentioned update on Steam eight days later. It took another week before the improved version actually came out, which the developers pointed out with just one post on social networks. We haven’t even received a press release, either directly from the team at GoldKnights or from the publisher, Plaion, which can feel like wasted potential even considering the small reach of such an important release. In any case, The Last Oricru: Final Cut is now available – for existing players for free as an update on PC and consoles, and for new players at a reduced price of 20 euros.

As for changes, the developers have prepared a number of them beyond the very long list of fixed bugs. It is the first to introduce an improved multiplayer, which now uses better netcode and removes, for example, ailments with desynchronization of information about both involved players. According to the developers, the gameplay should now be much smoother and more enjoyable, with the basic player being able to use all the features of the game without any restrictions. Keeping in mind that The Last Oricru is an action-packed affair, the other big changes are to the combat system. At this point, the folks at GoldKnights have gone the route of greater accessibility and made fighting enemies easier. But the result should be more fun for a wider audience, which is reflected, for example, in more benevolent timing of concealing attacks, more intuitive counterattacks or slowing down the speed of enemies. Stamina has also been worked on, which is now easier to maintain in sufficient capacity and thus enjoy, for example, playing as a mage without much difficulty. The developers have also focused on some boss fights – specifically mentioning the encounters with Aida and Mother – which have been balanced and are now smoother in multiplayer as well.

But aside from the combat, The Last Oricru is also about exploring the game world, so the next set of modifications went in that direction. The developers are talking about improved navigation or more detailed guidance in the opening parts of the game. This is accompanied by reworked tutorials so that every player can easily penetrate the basic game mechanics and make full use of them. Therefore, everyone should now be equipped with enough information, due to the absence or insufficient explanation of which, in the original version of the game, they could encounter problems arising from a misunderstanding of some systems. It also seems that the nod to the soulslike genre, which was already diminishing during development, is now even less apparent when it comes to tweaking the game’s save system. With terminals, you can now save the game in up to 20 slots and reload any position. At the same time, after the second visit to the terminal, you can decide for yourself whether leaving it will automatically mean restarting the game world – as the players of soulslike games are used to – or not. The last significant bonus is a pair of new maps with spatial puzzles, after completing which you are rewarded in the form of new armor.
