HBO’s ‘The Last of Us’ Season 2 Expected in Spring 2025
Get ready to return to the post-apocalyptic world! HBO’s hit adaptation of "The Last of Us" will be back for its second season in the spring of 2025. While the exact premiere date remains under wraps, Warner Bros. Discovery CEO and President of Global Streaming JB Perrette recently revealed the timeframe during a presentation at the Wells Fargo TMT Summit.
"[Our biggest tentpoles] started to come back in rotation this summer with House of The Dragon 2, then we go The White Lotus which will come in the first quarter in February," Perrette said. "Then we go into The Last Of Us Season 2 in the second quarter, then we have a new Game of Thrones series [A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms], smaller scale series, that will come in over the summer."
This confirmation aligns with previous statements from HBO CEO Casey Bloys, who had hinted at a spring 2025 release back in November. The second quarter spans from April to June, making a springtime premiere for Joel and Ellie’s next chapter highly likely.
Fans eager for a glimpse of what’s to come have already been treated to a taste of the action. In September, HBO celebrated “The Last of Us Day” by dropping the first official trailer for Season 2, teasing the drama and emotional turmoil that awaits.
"The Last of Us" Season 1 was a knockout success, earning 24 Emmy nominations, including a nod for Outstanding Drama Series. The series captivated audiences with its harrowing story, stunning visuals, and powerful performances from Pedro Pascal and Bella Ramsey.
HBO is undoubtedly hoping to replicate that success with Season 2 while strategically spacing out its major releases. The network has a packed schedule for 2025, with highly anticipated series like House of the Dragon, The White Lotus, and A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms all vying for attention. Staggering these releases allows each show to shine without cannibalizing viewership.
With the anticipation building, fans are eagerly awaiting an official release date.
Notably, The Last of Us Part II video game, the inspiration for the TV series, launched on June 19, 2020. Could HBO be aiming for a June 2025 premiere to coincide with the game’s fifth anniversary? While tempting, that might put it too close to the Game of Thrones spinoff, A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms, slated for the summer. An April or May premiere might be more strategically advantageous. Keep an eye out for more news from HBO as the release window approaches!
