Today, June 19, 2022, it is two years since the release of The Last of Us Part II. It was a rare case of a very expensive project at the time, the creators of which decided not to “go to the fans” and turned the concept of the game in a direction that no one expected (apart from the brutal leaks before the release). The result was a game that some loved and others hated. In our review the following verdict was issued at that time:
“Everything the number one did the second one does better. It is another extremely narrative and emotional pilgrimage with unforgettable characters. At the same time, a shift in the technical and artistic processing of video games. As always, that doesn’t mean The Last of Us: Part II is for everyone – especially if you have a weaker stomach and explicit violence bothers you. But if you bite it, one of the best games of the generation is waiting for you. “
It is definitely worth noting that the technical and artistic qualities of the game were also highly valued by competition experts, as we learned from an internal review prepared for Microsoft’s Xbox division and subsequently somewhat inadvertently published during a lawsuit between Epic Games and Apple:
“The design and attention to detail in The Last of Us Part II is the absolute top in all aspects, and the overall presentation is significantly more advanced than anything other teams have created on consoles or PCs. Not every game design can support this level of visual detail, and not every team has the talent or money to achieve it, but this game sets a new standard for what we might accomplish with the next generation of consoles. The Last of Us Part II is an extremely rare video game: what it achieves in the art of storytelling in a video game format outweighs whether everyone “liked” it or “enjoyed it.”
At the end of the year, the game also won an unprecedented 321 polls for the best game title of the year, both from the professional community and from the voting players themselves. It has happened so far the most prized game year in recorded history. We can only hope that (not only thanks to the fresh notification remake of the first part for PC) is only a matter of time before this PlayStation gem also reaches other platforms and other players will be able to appreciate its qualities.
