In contrast to linear ratings television, streaming providers are rather cautious about their numbers. At Netflix, for example, the first season of “The Night Agent” was the most-watched series in 2023. According to the company, over 800 million hours of the show have been streamed.

The page “Torrent Freak” has now published a ranking of the series that were most illegally downloaded in 2023. And it’s surprising: Netflix, the service with the highest prices, doesn’t even appear in the top 10.
Is this good or bad for Netflix?
Apparently, when it comes to unauthorized downloading, the price of a show is less important than the quality. Netflix has recently been decreasing more and more, but not the number of users. After the provider imposed a partial account ban, subscription numbers even went up. So no one steals from Netflix because everyone has an account there anyway?
That can only be speculated. In any case, formats that only run on pay TV in the USA are particularly popular with pirated copies. For years, the pirated copy list was dominated by “Game of Thrones” (from the pay channel HBO), but the fantasy epic has come to an end since 2019.
The new Pirate Top Ten consists of series that were particularly well received this year. The most illegally watched show was “The Last of Us”. The video game adaptation from HBO (on Sky) was also the best series of the year on the IMDb rating platform with 8.8 points.
That means: Apparently the willingness to steal increases especially when it’s worth it…

The third season of the acclaimed “Star Wars” show aired on Disney+ in March. Even if the enthusiasm decreased significantly this time, the same did not apply to the Internet smugglers. The first two places are taken by Pedro Pascal (48)!
