The last jump took Montler to the Olympic final in long jump

Personal best with 8.27 at the Diamond League gala in Monaco on July 9 – Thobias Montler came to Tokyo with good competition form.

On Saturday – three weeks later – he was one of 32 jumpers at Tokyo Stadium in search of a place in the long distance final. The qualifying limit was set at 8.15 (or the top twelve).

7.82 in the first, then trampling – it would take more to reach the final. Nervous situation before the third and final jump.

– Yes, thank you, my heart was quite high, Montler says afterwards.

– There was a lot that spun in my head when I went out on the approach track. But I felt after the second hope that as long as I do not trample, I will solve this. I had a good feeling in my body.

Personal best is 8.27. That should not be enough for a medal, says Thobias Montler.

– It will require more than that, something else can not think of anything else. But I think I have it in me. The body feels good.

– Now I’ll just go down in laps and get into the routines. Then just recharge before the final.

Thobias Montler had the eighth best result when everyone had jumped twice, but was then passed by some names.

The third jump was Montler’s best. 8.01 was the fourth best result in the qualifiers.

Cuban Juan Miguel Echevarria and Greek Miltiadis Tentoglou were the only ones to cross the qualifying line in the first attempt. They jumped 8.50 and 8.22 respectively.

The length final starts at 03.10 on Monday night Swedish time.
