Production of the legendary 747 has finally ended. An era ends after 54 years. But the jumbo will fly for years to come.
The year is 1971. The President of Switzerland is Rudolf Gnägi. Women’s suffrage at federal level is introduced. And Swissair is enthusiastic. Because a new fleet member arrived in February. It is larger and heavier than anything that has previously flown with the traditional airline. The machine takes off on March 20, 1971 for the first scheduled flight from Zurich Airport to New York. It is a brand new Boeing 747-257B, registration HB-IGA.
