In Kassel, last generation activists have repeatedly caused traffic disruptions in recent weeks. There are also demos on Friday.

Kassel – Due to last generation demonstrations, there may be major traffic restrictions and traffic restrictions in the Kassel city area this Friday. The city says public transport is also affected. In the past few days there have been repeated protests by Last Generation supporters in Kassel. According to the city, today’s demos have been registered.

On Friday afternoon, the activists first met on Friedrichsplatz to sing together. They then moved along Frankfurter to the Trumpet near the Filmpalast, where they temporarily lay down on the road. From there we went back towards Friedrichsplatz. Meanwhile, the trumpet had to be closed so that cars could only turn left. According to the police, this caused traffic to back up down the entire vineyard.

On the other hand, traffic was rerouted from Du-Ry Street, causing disruptions beyond the Old Market. According to the police, these were rather insignificant. From 1:45 p.m. the protest procession was off the street so that it could be opened to traffic again.

Demos of the Last Generation all Friday in Kassel

  • The traffic disruptions announced for this Friday will particularly affect Friedrichsplatz and Steinweg from around 11:30 a.m. The road towards the vineyard was blocked there at midday.
  • From around 3 p.m. there will also be an elevator on Leipziger Straße/Bundesstraße 7 from Kaufungen towards the city.
  • At around 5 p.m., the pedestrian zone and the stone path will be the focus of the meetings, according to the city.

According to HNA information, these are various organizations that have announced their participation. According to the city, road users should avoid the areas as much as possible. You also need to pay attention to the emergency lane.

More information about bus and train restrictions can be found at kvg.de as well as in the NVV app and on the NVV service telephone at 0800 / 9 39 08 00 (daily from 5 a.m. to 10 p.m., Fridays and Saturdays until midnight).

On Friday morning, Kassel Mayor Sven Schoeller met with members of the Last Generation in their protest camp in the Goetheanlage to exchange ideas with them.

Protests also on Wednesday and Thursday in Kassel

On Wednesday, the activists gathered at Lutherplatz to protest against the subsidies at Calden Airport with banners such as “Kill fossil subsidies” and “Stop airport madness in Kassel”. On yesterday’s holiday they protested on Wilhelmshöher Allee near the train station.

A49 and Altmarkt junction temporarily closed

On Monday (September 30th), activists temporarily brought traffic on the A49 near Kassel to a standstill. According to the police, the 40 activists who caused the blockade on the motorway were initially taken to the North Hesse police headquarters. There their identities were established and expulsions were issued. They were then released again.

Last Saturday, 200 climate activists paralyzed the Altmarkt intersection in Kassel, causing significant traffic disruptions in the city center. Drivers turned around on the streets. The police then redirected traffic around the Altmarkt. Buses and trams also had to bypass the area.

Last generation protest camp in the Goetheanlage

Since the end of September, the “Last Generation” group has pitched its tents in the Goetheanlage in Kassel. This is causing concern in the district. This is not the first time that a protest movement has used the park as a campsite.

In mid-September, the group also smeared the facade of Kassel Airport in Calden with paint. The group also announced during a press conference in front of the terminal that the city of Kassel would become the scene of nationwide climate protests for a few weeks. The first demonstrations followed with blockades of streets in Kassel, during which activists were also taken into custody.
