With the disappearance of Paul Garin, born in 1934, it is a figure of the Charterhouse which died out. It was he who made the Col de Porte station (Isère) what it is today, near Grenoble.
Paul Garin created the Col de Porte station in 1958
It was not he who invented the first ski lift in France, it is a certain Charles Rossat, in 1934, a charpentier who had the idea of adapting the cables he used to skid his logs to make a 200-meter-long “ski lift” for skiers in the meadow of the pass. But he, on the land his father bought in 1936, he settled ski lifts in 1958, added a chairlift in 1978 and built a hotel, the Cartusia, in the early 1980s. He was the owner and operator of the station until 2008, when it was taken over by the municipality.
Elected for 49 years from the municipality of Sarcenas
Paul Garin also entered in the municipal council of Sarcenas in 1959 at the age of 25, he became deputy, then mayor in 1983. Elected and re-elected for over thirty years, he only left the mayor’s chair in 2014. “The Col de Porte was” shaped “by Paul Garin”, highlighted Sylvain Duloutre, the new mayor elected in 2020 in Sarcenas. “Because he was both a person who had an exceptional commitment in public life – elected for 49 years, mayor for 31 years – and an entrepreneur. He was a driving force in the development of the resort, by creating the ski lifts. machinery that he has used for decades and through his real estate investment with the construction of his hotel. “
A page in the history of the Col de Porte has been turned
“From now on, the station is subject to Public Service Delegation and it is a new page which turns with the arrival of the Metropolis of Grenoble. We went from the private sector to a community that will continue the activity, but no longer only with skiing but in _four Seasons._“ Paul Garin will be buried this Wednesday afternoon in Sarcenas at 2 p.m. He was the father of four children.
