“The Last Dance”: in the head of Michael Jordan

The question began to emerge around the third episode, and kept on itching afterwards, for lack of a satisfactory answer. Why? Over the course of the matches and the testimonies, we could see quite clearly that Michael Jordan was a compulsive competitor, an obsessed with victory, a sickly bettor, a tyrant, or even “a hell of an asshole” according to a lot of his former teammates. Without ever understanding why.

This is the limit of The Last Dance, a precious ten-episode documentary series about the 1997-1998 season of the Chicago Bulls, which Netflix and ESPN have broadcast in recent weeks. You can see it all, but you don’t understand the nature of the inner fire that devours Michael Jordan to the point of making him the best player in basketball history and probably one of the three or four greatest sports champions of his century.
