It is the fifth and last film, starring Harrison Ford, of one of the most memorable sagas in cinema history, the product of the union between George Lucas after his success with Star Wars and Steven Spielberg and breaking the box office with ‘Jaws’.

Two geniuses who have revolutionized the film industry since the 1970s, took Harrison Ford to the next level after his popularity in Star Wars, to become an archaeologist with adventures that begin in the early part of the 20th century in distant Bangkok, when he must escaping from Chinese gangsters and ends up revealing the practices of a cult that performs human sacrifices in India, in ‘Indiana Jones and the temple of perdition’, the first installment in 1981.

The trilogy in the eighties would culminate with the addition to the cast of Sean Connery as the father of the protagonist in ‘Indiana Jones and the last crusade’, a true competition between the Nazi army and the Joneses for the chalice used at the last supper by Jesus .

It would take almost 20 years for Harrison Ford to take up his character’s hat and whip again, and for the unforgettable soundtrack created by John Williams to sound in movie theaters again, in ‘Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Skull of glass’, The Nazi world is already left behind and is concentrating on the dreaded Cold War.

Decade and a half later, and assuring that it is the last, Ford returns with ‘Indiana Jones and the dial of destiny’, which will be in theaters starting this Thursday.

Under the direction of James Mangold, with a cast made up of Phoebe Waller-Brigge, Mads Mikkelsen, Boyd Holbrook and Antonio Banderas, in a new adventure that completely changes the plans of an Indy willing to retire from his role as an archeology professor in college to spend the days in his small apartment in New York.

Along with Indy, he is brought to life by a collection of colorful characters, some new and some much-loved already part of the franchise, played by an international cast.

A long way

From the moment talks began about the return of Indiana Jones, the entire creative team behind the project knew that Ford was the only candidate to bring the iconic character to life. “The obvious challenge is that you’re going back to a genre without recasting. You have the same actor who was playing this in his late thirties. I think what was perhaps perceived as a disadvantage is actually an advantage. What happens towards the end of people’s stories can be just as fascinating as what happens at the beginning of them. If you take the opportunity, it opens all kinds of doors for storytelling,” said co-writer Jez Butterworth.

The beginning of the story, set in 1969, finds Indy spending nights alone in a modest New York apartment. “The Indiana Jones we know in 1969 is the result of the experience we’ve had with him in the other movies. This is what happens when you’re a broke archaeologist/professor and you’re frustrated in your career and it’s your last day at work before retirement and maybe you have a drink in the middle of the day every once in a while. He is discouraged, he is cynical, he is hurt, but the circumstances that are about to happen take him on a great adventure in which there is a degree of redemption, but also of renewal ”, described Harrison Ford.

In the new installment, Jones’ path crosses with that of Helena Shaw, played by British actress Phoebe Waller-Bridge, uA goddaughter she hasn’t seen in years and who’s in search of a rare artifact her father entrusted to Indy years before.: the famous Archimedean Dial, a device that supposedly has the power to locate fissures in time.

Jürgen Voller is an old nemesis of Indy’s, a former Nazi who now works as a physicist in the US space program and has his own plans for the Dial – a scheme that could change the course of world history.

The Danish actor Mads Mikkelsen gives life to the villain, who escapes all the stereotypes of the character. “We try to avoid the cliché of the German or the Nazi with the extreme accent and the extreme madness. We wanted him to be a man who falls under the radar once he moves to the United States because he’s predominantly a scientist. He is a pragmatic, content man that you would pass on the street,” Mikkelsen described.

In his new and latest adventure, Indy has the support of Renaldo, a sailor whom he turns to when he needs the services of an expert diver in Greece. The character is played by Spanish actor Antonio Banderas. “Renaldo is a fisherman now, but he was probably a guerrilla fighter who fought for freedom, maybe in the Spanish Civil War, maybe later in World War II. He is a brave man, a little crazy but in a good way. And he is a loyal friend of Indy’s. I think at this particular moment in history, Indy needs that,” Banderas said.

Basil Shaw, played by British actor Toby Jones, is Helena’s father. Archaeologist and Oxford academic, he is one of Indy’s best friends and former sidekick. In the story, Shaw is hunted by Colonel Weber, played by German actor Thomas Kretschmann, supervisor of Hitler’s operation to loot art and artifacts from Nazi-occupied territories and ship them to Germany.
