The largest Hindu temple in northern Germany is now in Bremen on the grounds of the Ellener Hof. Hindu priests from 15 different countries attended the opening.
After a five-day opening ceremony – including many offerings – the new Hindu temple in Bremen-Osterholz was opened on Thursday. It is located on the site of the social-ecological district project Stadtleben Ellener Hof. With an interior area of around 460 square meters and a ten meter high “holy royal tower” decorated with around 100 hand-modeled figures of gods, it is the largest Hindu temple in northern Germany.
500 people in the community
The colorful and ornate Sri Varasiththivinayakar Temple is dedicated to the Hindu god of fortune, Ganesha. After several years of planning and building, the 500-strong community was now looking forward to the opening. “I have been the first chairman of the community for ten years and have been in Germany since 1989. My family and I missed a temple during this time,” said Murugatahas Karalasingam about buten un binnen.
Accordingly, the opening on Thursday was celebrated in a big way. 15 Hindu priests from Germany, India, England and Norway had come specially. Bremen’s former mayor Henning Scherf was also there. He said the church is a sign of diversity and a cosmopolitan society.
Support from the Bremen Home Foundation
The church was financed by donations and a loan. The project received significant support from the Bremer Heimstiftung, which provided the property. Precisely defined rites had to be observed during planning and construction: The correct time for signing the lease contract for the property was determined according to the position of the moon. In addition, the dairy cow “Madel” checked whether the area is actually suitable for building the temple – and gave her blessing to the joy of the parishioners. It goes without saying that she was present at the inauguration as a guest of honor.
The community is now looking forward to everyday life. “Now all the work is done and we can finally pray here once a day,” says Murugatahas Karalasingam. The temple is open from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m., the ceremonies begin at 7 p.m.
