The largest Dutch meat supplier is counting on a substantial reduction in livestock before 2030 NOW

Vion, the largest meat company in the Netherlands, expects to see a decrease in the number of pigs and cattle by 20 percent in Western Europe in the next ten years. That is what the meat processor, Ronald Lotgerink, says on Thursday to Het Financieele Dagblad (FD). The reason is the expected decrease in meat consumption.

Pork would be 1 percent less in demand every year, and the beef market would decrease by 2 percent each year, estimates Vion. This trend is expected both in the home country of the Netherlands and in the second largest market, Germany.

According to the newspaper, the company is the first major company in the sector to make such a prediction about the impact of climate policy and changing consumer preferences. Companies such as FrieslandCampina would stay on the ground because government policy does not yet seem to be fully established.

Vion is the largest meat company in the Netherlands, with nearly 12,000 employees and a turnover of 4.7 billion euros in 2018. The company is also focusing on meat substitutes due to the expected change in consumer preferences.

From next February, vegetarian products will roll off the belt in a former slaughterhouse that was converted by Vion. Annually it would be about 7,500 tons, which should generate up to 35 million euros in revenue per year.
