The largest decline in employment in Ulsan last year due to the cold weather

-11,000 people↓… Decreased in all age groups except over 60-Direct hit from the manufacturing industry and the face-to-face service industry that has supported the local economy

-December, the worst of last year… Difficult to expect improvement at the beginning of the year

The number of employed workers in Ulsan last year declined to a record high due to the cold wave of employment from Corona 19.

In particular, the situation in December, when the third spread of Corona 19 reached its peak, recorded the worst level last year, and it is difficult to expect the job market to improve at the beginning of the year.

◇Employment decline is the first in history to reach 10,000, hitting the economic downturn and youth

According to the’Employment Trends in Ulsan City in December 2020, Annual Employment Trends’ released by the Southeast Regional Statistics Office on the 13th, the number of employed in Ulsan last year was 560,000, down 11,000 (-1.9%) from the previous year. This is the largest decline ever since the statistics were compiled in 1999.

Ulsan’s annual number of employed has declined for three consecutive years since 2018. The decline in the number of employed people decreased from 9,000 in 2018 to 3,000 in 2019, but increased significantly last year due to the aftermath of the corona, reaching 10,000 for the first time in history.

Earlier, there were three decreases in the number of employed people: 2009 (-5 thousand people) right after the global financial crisis, in 2018 (-9 thousand people), when employment became unstable due to the aftermath of the downturn in the shipbuilding industry, and in 2019 (-3 thousand people).

Last year, the number of employed in Ulsan decreased in all age groups, except for those aged 60 or older (9,000). The decline in the 30s (-6 thousand people) and 40s (-6 thousand people), which are the’economic waists’, and the 15-29 years old (-6 thousand people) of the youth group, was greatly affected, and the 50s (-2 thousand people) were also hit. .

The manufacturing industry, which has supported the Ulsan economy by industry, and the wholesale/retail/restaurant business, which have been damaged by the prolonged corona 19 crisis and reinforced social distancing, were hit directly.

As the employment shock from Corona 19 and the manufacturing recession combined, the number of employed in the manufacturing industry in Ulsan decreased by 15,000 from a year ago, and the number of employees in the manufacturing industry in Ulsan decreased sharply, and the wholesale, retail, and hotel restaurant businesses, which are face-to-face services, also decreased by 7,000.

On the other hand, business, personal, public service and others (6,000 people), electricity, transportation, telecommunications, finance (4,000 people), social overhead capital and other service industries (3,000 people) increased.

By employment status, both waged workers (-6 thousand) and non-wage workers (-5 thousand) decreased.

Among wage workers, regular workers (2,000) increased, but temporary workers (4,000) and daily workers (4,000) decreased significantly. The corona 19 shock is concentrated on the underprivileged.

Among non-wage workers, the number of self-employed without employees increased by 2,000 from the previous year, but the number of self-employed with employees who had to pay a salary decreased by 3,000. It is analyzed that the number of cases of firing existing employees or starting a business alone has increased.

The number of temporary leavers increased by 10,000 to 20,000, the largest increase since related statistics came out in 1999. The annual temporary leave is also the highest ever.

Last year, the number of unemployed in the region was 25,000, down by 100 (-0.4%) from the previous year.

Ulsan’s employment rate was 58.1%, down 1.0%p from the previous year, and the unemployment rate was 4.2%, the same as the previous year.

The economically active population was 585,000, a decrease of 11,000 (-1.9%) from the previous year, while the inactive population who was neither employed nor unemployed during the survey was 379,000, 9,000 (2.4%) compared to the previous year. ) Increased.

◇ Decrease for 10 consecutive months… December’s worst indicator

Last year, the number of employed in Ulsan has declined for 10 consecutive months since March, when the spread of Corona 19 began in earnest.

Local employees are employed in March (-6 thousand), April (-17,000), May (-18,000), June (-2 million), July (-15,000), 8 Month (-11,000 people), September (-14,000 people), October (-16,000 people), followed by November (-18,000 people), and the last month (December-20,000 people) 1,000 people).

The decline in the number of employed gradually decreased from the bottom of June, but expanded again from September due to the re-proliferation of Corona 19.

In particular, in December, when the social distancing stage was raised due to the third pandemic of Corona 19, the number of employed decreased by 21,000, recording the largest decrease since January 2019 (-28,000).

December was the worst since the coronavirus outbreak. Compared to the previous low in March (-6 thousand people), the decline reached 3.5 times, and the decline increased by 3,000 people from the previous month, November, and climbed to 20,000.

The wholesale, retail, lodging and restaurant business (-14,000 people) was hit hardest by the re-proliferation of Corona 19. The manufacturing industry also decreased by 5,000 people compared to the same month last year, recording a decline for 63 consecutive months since October 2015.

By job position, the number of employees in the underprivileged, such as temporary and daily workers, and self-employed people with employees, has increased.

Given this situation, it is difficult to expect a major improvement in the employment situation in January and February this year.

The employment index has characteristics that reflect the economic situation as a lagging factor, and the number of employed (+14,000 in January and +10,000 in February) from January to February of last year at the time of comparison showed an increase without being affected by the coronavirus. This is because the underlying effect appears. Reporter Kim Ji-eun
