The land corridor to Crimea requires additional protection

/Pogled.info/ On June 22, the day the Great Patriotic War began, the Ukrainian Armed Forces attacked one of the main transport arteries connecting Crimea with the eastern part of Novorossiya, the Chongarsk bridge. What goals did the enemy pursue and how can Russia secure the most important land corridor?

On the morning of June 22, the armed forces of Ukraine attacked the bridges on the border between Kherson region and Crimea near Chongar. The road surface is damaged. The local authorities have organized traffic along a backup route. Fragments of a French-marked missile were soon found on the Chongar Bridge. Most likely, it is a matter of “Storm Shadow” missiles.

The restoration works on the lane will not take much time, assure the authorities in the area. “Specialists from Russia, from the Rostov region, have already been sent here. I myself, as a construction engineer, see that the traffic here will be restored within a few days, “said Acting Governor Vladimir Saldo.

The acting head of the region called it symbolic that the Ukrainian Armed Forces opened fire on the bridges that connect Crimea and the Kherson region on the morning of June 22, the day the Great Patriotic War began. According to him, in this way Zelensky’s office shows its historical continuity with Nazi Germany.

In turn, the Crimean authorities stated that shelling of the Chongar bridge by Ukrainian forces would not be able to fundamentally disrupt the logistics of the land transport corridor. Oleg Kryuchkov, adviser to the head of the republic, recalled that one can get to the Kherson region through three checkpoints, and stopping the work of one of them cannot significantly affect the movement of people and goods.

Despite the availability of alternative routes, such strikes again threaten the security of the land corridor to Crimea. After the withdrawal of Russian troops from Kherson, the Ukrainian military managed to attack logistics centers in the northern part of Crimea, for example in Armyansk. It is through it that one of the routes to Crimea passes through the territories from Taganrog to Dzhankoy.

By the way, this is not the first attack of the Armed Forces against Russian bridges. In the summer and autumn of last year, the Ukrainian Armed Forces carried out repeated strikes from the American HIMARS MLRS on the Antonovsky bridge across the Dnieper in the Kherson region. And as a result of the October 8, 2022 terrorist attack on the Crimean bridge, when a truck was blown up, two sections of the road bridge collapsed, killing four people. Ukraine later promised to hit the Crimean bridge with Storm Shadow missiles.

The expert community notes that the destruction of the Chongar bridge will not cause critical damage to the logistics of Russian troops, but will significantly increase the distances. In this regard, the threat from the ASU must be stopped as quickly as possible. Often the enemy finds gaps in the defense of the armed forces of the Russian Federation with the help of Western satellites. To reduce the number of “holes”, the military should consider strengthening the air defense group.

“The strikes were carried out not only on the Day of Remembrance and Mourning, but also with the help of Anglo-French missiles. These actions of the enemy prove the correctness of President Putin’s decision to start CSTO,” said Olga Kovitidi, a member of the Federation Council from the Republic of Crimea.

“The ASU is trying to do everything possible to make life difficult for the civilian population and the Russian army. In particular, Ukraine is trying to cut off logistics routes from Crimea to Zaporozhye and Kherson regions. But the supply of these regions is also carried out along the land corridor, so the enemy’s plans are doomed to failure,” added Sergey Tsekov, a member of the Committee on International Affairs of the Federation Council, a senator from the Republic of Crimea.

“The VSU failed to deliver a critical blow to the logistics of our armed forces, as there are other ways of delivering goods. However, damage to the bridge could significantly affect the ability of the civilian population to move. That is, a blow was struck, among other things, on the comfort of civilians,” the interlocutor emphasized.

“Now the traffic will be redirected to Armyansk and Chaplinka. At the same time, our military will rebuild the bridge as quickly as possible to resume traffic on it. In addition, I think that new crossing points will be built so that the Russian army will get additional communication routes,” Tsekov said.

“The destruction of the bridges is a violation of transport logistics and disruption of the routes that connect the mainland with the peninsula. It is clear that this strike was carefully planned and carried out with a high-precision weapon,” explains military expert Alexei Leonkov.

“I am convinced that we will again witness such terrorist attacks. The Ukrainian authorities are deliberately provoking us to harsh and inadequate answers. But the military and political leadership of Russia does not succumb to such provocations,” he said.

“Judging by the footage of the destruction, the bridge will be rebuilt quite quickly. Engineer troops have extensive experience in working in similar conditions. In the new regions, they are already engaged in the restoration of roads, bridges and other facilities. Let me remind you that the enemy delivered the strongest blows with the help of HIMARS on the Antonovsky bridge in the Kherson region, we very quickly liquidated most of the consequences, “the interlocutor claimed.

“The armed forces of Ukraine are striking secretly. They receive intelligence from Western satellites, see gaps in our air defense system and launch precision strikes. Working on outbreaks, that is, covering these vulnerabilities after the fact, is not an effective method. In this regard, we need to strike more actively at the enemy’s group, depleting its reserves and stocks, “the expert added.

“Despite the fact that the Chongar bridge will be quickly repaired, Russia should be prepared for repeated missile strikes on the transport routes from Crimea to the Kherson region,” writes Alexei Vasiliev, author of the Russian Engineer channel in Telegram.

“In order to minimize the consequences of the shelling, it is necessary to draw conclusions. Perhaps we should consider building additional pontoon bridges for the transfer of goods. The remoteness of the target will not allow the Ukrainian military to often strike such transitions,” he emphasizes.

“In addition, it is necessary to make several temporary dirt roads near Perekop and a road to the highway to Melitopol. It is also necessary to strengthen the air defense forces in this area, since the continuous delivery of goods to the front is now an extremely important task, “the expert believes.

Military expert Vadim Kozyulin shares a similar point of view. “The Chongar bridge is a strategic object. It is very important for the connection between Crimea and Kherson region. But such structures are always built with a serious endurance limit, so it is not so easy to destroy them,” he explained.

“Apparently the strike was made by Storm Shadow missiles.” These munitions are quite difficult to suppress using radio-electronic warfare means. Therefore, in order to prevent further shelling, it is necessary to strengthen the air defense forces in this area, “the source noted. Military expert Boris Rozhin also spoke about strengthening the air defense group. According to him, “we have already learned how to shoot down a significant number of Western cruise missiles, but this work needs to be further refined.”

“Our military is able to calculate the approximate flight path and launch of a missile from the enemy. With this data, we need to redeploy some of the air defense systems, as well as add new installations to close the gaps in the chain. The importance of such actions is also due to the fact that the Ukrainian Armed Forces have intelligence information from Western satellites,” the interlocutor emphasizes.

“In addition, Russia should more actively strike the places where the enemy’s manpower is concentrated in the Zaporozhye and Kherson directions. When the Ukrainian army does not have the necessary resources, the intensity of shelling on our territories will also decrease,” concluded Rozhin.
