The vaccine is most likely effective against the British variant of Covid-19
REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, LONDON – The new variant of Covid-19, which was first detected in the UK or known as B.1.1.7, is said to not cause more severe disease in patients. This was revealed in a recent study published in a medical journal The Lancet Infectious Diseases on Monday (12/4).
The study analyzed 496 Covid-19 patients who were admitted to British hospitals in November and December last year. Comparisons were then made to patients infected with variant B.1.1.7 or other variants. The investigators found no difference in the risk of severe disease, death, or other clinical outcomes in patient B.1.1.7 and other variants.
“Our data, in the context and limitations of real-world studies, provide initial certainty that the severity of patients hospitalized with B.1.1.7 is not much different from the severity in those who are not (infected with variant B.1.1.7), “said the researchers in the study.
A separate study published in a medical journal The Lancet Public Health found that the vaccine was most likely effective against variant B.1.1.7. This is because there is no clear increase in the rate of reinfection when compared with the non-British variant.
According to British scientists, the B.1.1.7 variant is about 40-70 percent more transmissible than the previous dominant variant. Studies have confirmed this. The United States Centers for Disease Control and Prevention says variant B.1.1.7 has become the most common strain in the country.
