The jousting athletics of the Interuniversity Athletic League (LAI) will move to Mayagüez, after the Governing Board of the sports organization received a recommendation from the Municipality of Ponce to move them from town for safety issues related to the tremors that have been felt in the south and southwest of the country since the end of December.
The decision was taken Monday at a meeting of the aforementioned governing body of the LAI.
“What the Government Board agreed is that we received a recommendation made by the municipality of Ponce that we do not carry out the Sports Festival because there are security concerns”, said Dr. Miguel Vélez Rubio, rector of the Bayamón campus of the University of Puerto Rico and president of the Government Board of the LAI.
The Athletics Fair will take place at the José Figueroa Freire stadium, in Mayagüez, from April 23 to 25. As part of the negotiations it was determined that the Fair will return to Ponce for next year, if conditions permit.
