The VAZ-2151, also known as the Lada Classic, was originally presented as a prototype at the 2002 auto show. The goal of the project was to modernize the traditional Zhiguli model (Lada Classic) by introducing a completely new body onto the existing rear-wheel drive chassis. Changes also included a different front suspension layout, as well as a 1.7-liter engine equipped with fuel injection and rack and pinion steering.

Although the car’s original design concept was intended to reference the classic VAZ 2101 and 2102, it ultimately moved away from the round headlights and iconic silhouette associated with those models. The VAZ-2151 was conceived either as a replacement or as an addition to the “classic” models in order to increase the production capacity of AvtoVAZ. Production of both sedans and station wagons was originally planned for 2006. Ultimately, the project was not further developed as it was deemed financially unviable.
