(Belga) The labor market experienced a very strong recovery in 2021 with 93,000 net jobs created compared to the previous year, a new Dynam report from the Institute for Research on Work and Society (HIVA) of the KU Leuven. On the other hand, it points to the current low mobility of workers.
The study concerns the second quarter of 2021, when the still strict health measures linked to the coronavirus pandemic were gradually lifted. This resulted in a strong revival of the labor market with the creation of 93,000 net jobs. “This is the highest level ever reached since Dynam measurements began in 2006,” said Professor Ludo Struyven (HIVA-KU Leuven). “It is even higher than during the economic boom period that preceded the financial crisis of 2008-2009.” The study also shows that there is not yet a recovery in work-to-work transitions, that is, the transition from one job to another without going through unemployment. With a full economic recovery, there would be more mobility in the labor market. Previous research has shown that in normal times, more than half of hires are employees coming directly from another job. “Workers are still cautious about changing jobs,” says Professor Struyven. “Employers avoid layoffs with the help of temporary unemployment and other support measures. It could be that, as the pre-coronavirus period was already complicated in certain sectors, employers will do everything possible to keep the right profiles. on board.” The only exceptions to the rule are the sectors of agriculture, construction, information and communication technologies, real estate, liberal and scientific professions, and education.
