At the same time, he supports the creation of a Palestinian state, defends Israel’s right to defend itself, blames the entire United States and, at the same time, calls for a fight against colonialism. The online magazine “Klik” tried to find out how the Kremlin behaves in the Israeli-Palestinian conflict and what it wants to achieve.
Putin as a mirror of Hamas
Of course, the Kremlin’s foreign policy did not change overnight. But the invasion of Ukraine accelerated this process. Now Moscow is publicly positioning itself as a kind of “ally” for ordinary people and all oppressed peoples. It wants to unite with them against the unjust world order; with anti-Western, anti-colonialist and anti-imperialist slogans.
In this global image of the “common man”, the Putin regime sees a natural, almost innate dislike of liberals, homosexuals, intellectual, political, artistic and financial elites and, of course, some anti-Semitism. On the other hand, with anti-imperialist slogans, Russia’s aggression against Ukraine is presented as a brave effort to break out of the fortress surrounded by a powerful enemy – the West.
In the eyes of their supporters, “Hamás” is doing something similar. The rebellion against the Western established order of things makes Russia and these fighters natural allies to some extent. At the very least, it certainly prevents them from becoming adversaries, as appears to have happened recently with the Islamic State, or Daesh.
