The Kremlin’s Propaganda Blames the West for Future Conflict in the Arctic

The Kremlin’s mouthpieces are creating informational ground to blame the West for a future conflict in the Arctic.

Well-known propagandist Mikhail Zvinchuk and another Z-military correspondent decided to respond to comments from the Danish Foreign Ministry regarding the presence of the Russian army in the Arctic.

Back at the end of December 2023, the Danish Military Intelligence Service published a report on Russian activity in the Arctic. Analysts from ISW There is no doubt that the Kremlin is already preparing the information ground for a new conflict, in which the West will again be the culprit.

Propagandist Zvinchuk said that Denmark’s statements are a hint of a possible conflict with the Russian Federation for “domination” in the Arctic.

Back on December 21, 2023, the Chief of the General Staff of the Russian Federation, Gerasimov, reported that troops were sent to the Arctic not to demonstrate force, but to ensure the “economic development of the Russian Federation” in this region.

However, the Kremlin itself states that it is Western countries that are preparing for confrontation with the Russian Federation in the Arctic, which is why the Russian Defense Ministry supposedly reformed the Leningrad Military District to confront Finland and NATO.

Analysts from ISW are confident that the statements by Zvinchuk and the Russian Defense Ministry are part of the Kremlin’s efforts to create information conditions to blame Denmark and other Western countries for future conflicts with Russia. This assessment of the event looks realistic, especially after Putin’s statements that the West is the main enemy of the Russian Federation.

The Kremlin’s mouthpieces have been given the task of penetrating as deeply as possible into the Russian information space on the topic of the Arctic. Another Z-public “Two Majors” added fuel to the fire when it published a post about a possible military conflict of the Russian Federation against the Baltic countries and Northern Europe.

Propagandists write that the West is preparing the Baltic and Northern European countries for a future confrontation with the Russian Federation. It is these countries that lack sovereignty and are governed from the outside. Similar Kremlin rhetoric is observed regarding Ukraine, when Putin constantly says that Kyiv is just a puppet in the hands of the West.

These information lines are disturbingly similar to the justifications the Kremlin used to invade Ukraine in 2022 and continue the war. There are no signs that Russia will seek conflict with NATO in the very near future, but Moscow began conducting similar information operations in Ukraine years before the Russian invasions in 2014 and 2022.

We previously reported that in December 2023, the United States “annexed” a large shelf in the Arctic, which Putin had his eye on.

Meanwhile, analysts from ISW cannot understand the change in Tokayev’s rhetoric regarding Russia and “friendship” with it.
