Dmitry Peskov, the Kremlin spokesman, warned about the possible consequences of the Russian-Ukrainian transition agreement that could be incomplete at his press conference on Wednesday. The Ukrainian government has repeatedly stressed over the past year that it will not extend or renew the agreement that expires on December 31.
There are (other) ways, but of course such decisions by the Ukrainian side cause serious damage to the interests of European consumers, for those who still want to buy … Russian gas at a reasonable price, guaranteed
– said Peskov, according to Reuters.
According to the spokesman, Russia may look for other routes, such as the planned Turkish gas hub. However, he pointed out that Europe will face higher prices if it buys liquefied natural gas from other sources, such as the United States.
Most of the affected European countries say they are ready to end gas supplies at the end of the year. As an alternative solution, it was proposed that Gazprom could deliver gas through the TurkStream pipeline, i.e. through Turkey, as well as Bulgaria, Serbia and Hungary, but this route also has a physical capacity limit.
It is worth remembering that the European Union and Ukraine recently asked Azerbaijan for help in facilitating gas transfer negotiations with Russia. According to some people, instead of Russian gas, even Azerbaijani gas could enter the Ukrainian transit pipelines, at least on paper, since it is also expected to be a Russian molecule, and Azerbaijan does not have enough free recoverable gas to replace it completely. the 15 billion cubic meters of gas that Russia sends through Ukraine every year.
