The specter of relegation has returned to the Krefeld Pinguinen after only two points from the past three games. In view of the two difficult away games on Tuesday in Mannheim and on Friday in Ingolstadt, it is to be feared that this unwelcome guest will make himself really comfortable in the dressing room during the Olympic break.
The Krefelders are currently in 13th place in the table and thus the last non-relegation zone. In 38 games, coach Igor Zakharkin’s players scored 46 points. At the moment there is little to suggest that more will be added before the break. Bottom of the table Bietigheim has only scored one point less, but has already played one match more, but is still within striking distance. But Iserlohn can be really dangerous for the black and yellow. The Sauerlanders around the two ex-Pinguine captains Martin Schymainski and Torsten Ankert have only collected 37 points, but played six games less due to their Corona break. Four of these games are scheduled for the Olympic break. So it could happen that the penguins have to watch idly as the selection of the new coach Kurt Kleinendorst passes in the table.

Instead of having to tremble for relegation, the Penguins actually wanted to attack the pre-playoff ranks. After the derby win against Cologne a week ago, they could still have legitimate hopes. However, the tide has turned due to the meager yield in the past three matches and the performance against Ingolstadt. Captain Laurin Braun then remarked critically in an interview with Magenta-Sport after the game against Ingolstadt: “It was quite simply a bad game from us. We didn’t get the pucks out and we didn’t win any tackles. There is nothing positive today. We wanted to attack the play-off ranks, but when we play like that it’s the other way around.”

The Kölner Haie are currently in tenth place and therefore in first place in the pre-play-off with 56 points. But they have already played three games more than the penguins.

If the black and yellow do not want to fall further in the table, the loss of Mirko Sacher and Dominik Tiffels in defense must be compensated. Jesper Jensen Aabo and Arturs Kulda take a lot of ice time in every game, but they can’t do it alone. Due to the failures, Maxi Gläßl has to take on more responsibility and ice age than intended. The same applies to the still young Philipp Mass and Tom-Eric Bappert. It is therefore hardly surprising that one or the other mistake creeps in there, which strong teams use.
