The Krayt Dragon from The Mandalorian is more important than you think

In the first episode of The Mandalorian emerged a giant Krayt Dragon. A creature that was not simply performed, but has played a major role in the history of Star Wars, since the first film.

In Star Wars: A New Hope C-3PO and R2-D2 walk through the desert. In the background is a mysterious snake-like skeleton.

Now it turns out to be a Krayt Dragon. Also a nice reference: in the same movie Obi-Wan Kenobi imitates the sound of that monstrous beast to scare away Tusken Raiders.

In the radio version of the film, the character explains: “I imitated the hunting cry of a Krayt Dragon,” said Obi-Wan in the radio version. Their imaginations did the rest and they took off. ”

Door The Mandalorian we now understand why the Tuskens are so afraid of that sound. Incidentally, George Lucas himself was not satisfied with the sound effect. In the later released Special Editions he tried alternatives.

Are you curious about what those same Tusken Raiders look like under their mask? The Star Wars comics and games provide answers, just like you in this article.

The Mandalorian

Anyway, back to The Mandalorian. The Krayt Dragon was an impressive appearance, of the CGI level that you normally only expect in Star Wars films.

The monster lived in an abandoned sarlacc pit, much to the surprise of Cobb Vanth. According to him there is no such thing, an empty sarlacc pit. Din Djarin, AKA Mando, emphasized how dangerous the Krayt Dragon is: “Yes, if you eat the sarlacc.”

It’s only the first time we’ve seen the Krayt Dragon, but they are anything but new. In fact, they’ve played an important role in Star Wars mythology since the very first movie in 1977.

Canyon en greater Krayt

Over the years, several official Star Wars books have explained more about the imposing dragons. Which reveal that there are two kinds of Krayt Dragons. The smaller and more common canyon krayt, and the rarer and a lot bigger greater krayt.

According to the Star Wars: The Visual Encyclopedia (2017) their bodies produce a poison called poison krayt venom. They spray that stuff on live prey before they eat their victim. Their bodies also contain the very valuable pearls, one of which we saw at the end of the first episode of The Mandalorian season two.

Star Wars Legends

For more answers we’ll be in Star Wars Legends have to dive. That’s all the books, games and comics from before the light reboot that Disney triggered. After the acquisition of Lucasfilm, Disney decided to do anything but the movies and a few series Legends explain.

Beautiful and entertaining stories, but not technically anymore canon. This allowed the company to start from scratch and build a story that didn’t have to take into account hundreds of books, games and comics of Star Wars history.

Since then, showrunners like Jon Favreau and Dave Filoni have regularly portrayed elements or characters Legends borrowed, but technically the answers those old books and comics offer are no longer canon.

Yet they are an interesting source of information, because they were once the official status quo. The answers and explanations that George Lucas had in mind. And in most cases, those details and backgrounds regarding, for example, different creatures or aliens simply remain in the new one canon from Disney.

Differences

So take what follows below with a grain of salt. They are the answers that Star Wars has officially provided to the questions we have, as well as answers that Disney may decide are no longer valid.

The Krayt Dragons featured regularly in the old books and comics. More often even than in the present canon. During the mating season their calls and noises could be heard throughout the Tatooine canyons.

Even then the dragons were of two kinds, the same as we mentioned above. One difference, however, is that both types in Legends were a lot smaller than the giant monster we’re in The Mandalorian have seen.

Also, the poison their body produces didn’t come out of their mouth, as in the episode, but instead they secreted it up their spine.

Tuskens were and are very afraid of Krayt Dragons, but the creatures are still very important to the Raiders. Their warriors were tasked with hunting one themselves as part of an initiation ritual.

Pearls and lightsabers

Also cool: in the Star Wars: Legacycomics, set a hundred years after the original trilogy, a Tusken Sith Lord calls himself Darth Krayt, to instill fear in his enemies. Anyway, that aside.

But what makes those pearls so important? In the old books and comics, the dragons use those pearls to crush the food they ate. To process. The pearls are popular commodities and very valuable in the present day canon.

In Legends that value goes a big step further. In it, the pearls of Krayt Dragons contain similar refractive properties to those of a Kyber crystal, and like those crystals can be used to build powerful lightsaber. Many Sith lords have therefore attempted to kill a Krayt Dragon in Star Wars history, with varying degrees of success.

Since in season two of The Mandalorian Din Djarin (Mando) will encounter at least one ex-Jedi, chances are that those traits will also return in the current canon big. Perhaps the final scene in which the Tuskens keep a pearl in the air while cheering was more important than you think.
