Park Hyeong-wook, Vice President of the Korean Medical Association (Professor of Humanities and Social Medicine at Dankook University School of Medicine), was elected as Chairman of the Emergency Response Committee of the Korean Medical Association.
The Korean Medical Association announced that Vice Chairman Park was elected in the emergency chairperson election held on the 13th. Vice Chairman Park received 123 votes out of a total of 233 valid votes, exceeding the majority with 52.79% of the votes, confirming his election. There are a total of 244 Korean Medical Association delegates with voting rights.
This election is the result of the Korean Medical Association converting to a non-presidential system after former Chairman Lim Hyun-taek was impeached six months after taking office due to controversy over abusive language. Vice Chairman Park’s term ends until the election of the next president in early January next year.
While receiving the certificate of election as chairman of the Korea Medical Association’s emergency committee, Vice Chairman Park is reported to have said, “The government has set up a time bomb called medical collapse. If we really want dialogue, the government must first stop the time bomb. Only then can true dialogue be possible.”
Vice Chairman Park received public support from the emergency committee chairman of the Korean Medical Residents Association (Daejeon Association), Dan Park. It is known that Chairman Park sent a message to the Korean Medical Association delegates, saying, “I recommend Professor Park as the chairman of the emergency committee.” In his message, he said, “Professor Park expects to be able to communicate smoothly with young doctors based on trust,” and “72 representatives of residents at each hospital expressed their agreement with this opinion.”
Meanwhile, former Chairman Lim posted on his SNS the night before, “Why is it necessary to hold elections for the emergency chairman of the Korean Medical Association’s representative council and the chairman of the medical association?” and “‘Dan Park’ will serve as the chairman and emergency chairman of the Korean Medical Association and resolve the medical crisis with all authority and responsibility.” “You can do it,” he said.
Former Chairman Lim’s remarks are being interpreted as targeting Chairman Park, who publicly expressed his impeachment.
In a comment attached to his post, former Chairman Lim foreshadowed a ‘war of revelations’, saying, “I will reveal in great detail to all doctor members what Park Dan and those who have been manipulating Park Dan behind it have been doing.”
