The South Korean industrial designer came up with a fun solution for people who can’t take their eyes off the screen of their mobile phone even long enough to see if there is an obstacle in their way while walking. Twenty-eight-year-old Peng Min-wuk developed a robotic eyeball, which he called the third eye. It can protect all users obsessed with the phone’s display on the go from injury.
The device opens its transparent eyelid whenever it detects that the user has tilted his head to look at his smartphone. When the user approaches an obstacle one meter to two meters away, the device beeps to warn him of the impending danger.
“This is what future humanity looks like with three eyes,” Peng told Reuters. “Since we can’t take our eyes off our smartphones, another eye will be needed in the future,” he added.
Peng said his third eye was meant to be a warning, not a real solution for smartphone addicts who didn’t care where they were going. “I hope that thanks to this satirical solution, people will realize the seriousness of the dependence on their device and think about themselves,” he added.
