The pandemic and Brexit changed the lives of the Kirby couple. Ron and his wife Amber, owners of a small apartment on the Costa de la Calma for almost a decade, decided that this was the right time to make a radical change in their existence. He, born in north London, had four decades of experience in prestigious kitchens, such as the British Royal House. But the pandemic closure and Great Britain’s departure from the European Union convinced them that it was time to begin a new stage outside their country. They thought that Mallorca could be a good option. They looked at several options until they found a small place in Santa Catalina, a neighborhood that was already emerging.
And in December 2021 they began the Market Kitchen adventure, which reflects well the philosophy of what they wanted to launch. A restaurant british which is nourished by local products from the adjacent market and which has been very well received from the first moment by a mainly British clientele and by many foreign clients, but also local ones, attracted by the pleasant atmosphere and friendliness of its owners. And, obviously, for an attractive offer of some of the traditional dishes of the cuisine of his country: from the crunchy and tasty fish and chips battered with local beer to the pork ribs marinated in black beer on caramelized onion tatin. By the way, with magnificent crispy crusts as an appetizer.
Surely one of the best-known dishes of this cuisine is roast beefthe famous roast beef or beef. At Market Kitchen this is the star dish of their Sunday offer and it has been so popular that it is necessary to book well in advance if you want to get one of the few tables they have, despite the fact that they have significantly extended the time window for lunch. In the two years they have been open, success seems to have blessed them. The restaurant is usually full, and its Sunday roast beef (€32) has already become a classic. It is a roast – here they use Galician cow -, which is served to taste, although it is advisable to order it rare, accompanied by a superb Yorkshire pudding that Rob prepares in his oven, perfectly crispy, with a filling of caramelized ribs sauce at a low temperature for several hours, and accompanied by a vegetable stew with broth reduction and roasted potatoes. Great texture and consistent flavor. A dish that represents an immersion in British cuisine, filtered by the ingredients acquired in the Santa Catalina market.
The chef and his wife have integrated very well into the area. The friendliness of the two is one of their main attractions, as well as the communicative side that Rob exudes in photographs and videos that he posts on social networks. Something he is quite used to from his regular contributions to culinary programs on the BBC and other stations. Author of several cookbooks, he has hanging on one of the walls – in what he has named chef´s ego– a letter from the current British sovereign when he was Prince of Wales, congratulating him on his book about children and cooking.
The desserts also shine with their own light. Our roast beef, which we complemented with cauliflower with baked cheese sauce, finished with a crunchy apple, thyme and praline crumble with vanilla ice cream, very successful, although somewhat overpriced (€12). The wines, few, interesting and expensive (€12 a glass of a Rioja Crianza and €47 a bottle, which costs €15 in the store, or a Giro Ros at €11 glass and €45 a bottle, or a Barolo 2018 at €89 ). Prices in the City of London.
