The Villa del Cine Festival opened this November 27 in Villa de Leyva. During this event, actress Cristina Umaña and actor Alejandro Aguilar presented the nominees for the 2023 edition of the Macondo Awards. Among other things, it was announced that there will be seedbeds throughout the country to “bring cinema closer” and break down prejudices surrounding national audiovisuals.
This year, the organization has an additional objective: to communicate the importance of these awards. Under the motto “The magic of Colombian cinema is in the Macondo Awards”, the aim will be to ensure that the richness of film productions can be positioned and made visible: the industry would benefit from greater contact with the audience and the awards could be perceived as cultural heritage. from the country.

Although the objective of this event has always been to recognize the excellence of Colombian productions, these awards have not yet achieved the expected visibility, an issue that they want to correct from now on: every year the Colombian film industry grows and enriches both the filmmakers and the Colombian audience.
Natalia Reyes, president of the Colombian Film Academy, said: “This edition comes loaded with truly encouraging and historic figures. 56 Colombian films were nominated and 45 of them are feature films. Furthermore, the visibility that women are receiving is very important: among all the candidates there are 13 female directors and 41 female producers, a number that we hope to continue increasing. Colombian cinema is winning the biggest awards internationally and our mission and intention with the Macondo Awards is to reach all Colombian territories. “We want every Colombian to connect and find out about this great moment that our cinema is experiencing.”
The ceremony will be hosted by Juana Acosta and the comedian, producer and audiovisual director Alejandro Riaño. In addition, it will be broadcast live on TNT and will later be available on HBO Max.
The award categories include 20 specialty awards and four special awards, covering most fundamental areas of film production. In this edition, two new categories were added: Best Animated Feature Film and the Macondo Award to the Ibero-American Union, a pilot award that seeks to emphasize the connection and collaboration between film academies from different countries.
