The King’s Message Sets All-Time Record With 10.76 Million Viewers | Television on Cadena SER

The Christmas message of King Felipe VI recorded this past December 24 a average audience of 10,760,000 viewers and 71% audience share in the total of 29 channels that broadcast the speech.

According to data from Kantar Media offered by Barlovento Comunicación, the King’s message of this 2020 has been the most viewed since there are records (1992), since only in 1993 they managed to exceed ten million viewers (10,254,000). However, in several years the percentage of screen share obtained in 2020 has been exceeded.

Compared to 2019, when the audience was 7.5 million with a 65.1% share in the accumulated of the 25 channels, there was an increase of 3,223,000 viewers, with a total television consumption of 16.5 million – 5.3 million more – and a increase of almost 6 points in screen share.

The data reflects that the demographic segments where the King’s Christmas message had a greater follow-up are among women, those over 25 years of age and the regions of Castilla León, Aragón and Asturias, which registered the highest percentages of screen share (86.9%, 82.9% and 81.6%, respectively). In contrast, Catalonia (46.5%) and the Basque Country (58.6%) were the communities where the message was least seen.

This year, King Felipe VI included in his Christmas message a few words to vindicate the “renovating” character of his reign and mark distances with his father, the king emeritus Juan Carlos. “The moral and ethical principles” demanded by citizens, he stressed, “oblige everyone without exceptions” and “are above any consideration, of whatever nature, even personal and family considerations.”

“This is how I have always understood it, in coherence with my convictions, with the way I understand my responsibilities as Head of State and with the renewing spirit that inspires my reign from day one, “he said in his traditional words to the Spanish.

The King once again chose the Audience Hall of the Palacio de la Zarzuela to deliver his traditional Christmas message along with the flags of Spain and the European Union and, on that occasion, a photo of the State tribute to the victims of Covid-19 at the moment in which he deposited, together with Princess Eleanor, some white roses in front of the cauldron.

This is the fourth time the king has chosen the Zarzuela room to deliver his speech. Previously, the Head of State made his speech from his office, the usual location from which his father, King Emeritus Juan Carlos I, delivered his message.
